Being Minted ~

Mint is one of those herbs when left to its own devices in the garden can run wild with no thought to your carefully designed haven that was planned with all 5 senses in mind. Suddenly being minted has a whole new meaning . . . .
Why not turn this invasive herb into a positive. Why not be minted in skin benefits? Why not be minted with the healthy benefits it has? Would your pocket not feel heavier with the all the savings you will make when you stop purchasing store bought versions and start making your own skin care? Do you not want less dangerous chemicals roaming around inside the body an
I for one vote to be minted.
Let's start by getting the skin in mint condition.

Credit to Shauna ~

The idea for this article was suggested to me from a fellow writer and friend on hubpages, Shauna, known as bravewarrior.
A terrific writer, supporter and follower of my work; she is minted not only with her ability to captivate readers but has an abundance of fresh mint and wanted some more ideas for ways to utilize her supply in the garden.
Thank you Shauna for the wonderful suggestion, I greatly appreciate it.
For keeping me on my toes by looking for new, interesting and varied solutions with mint, these recipes are dedicated to you!

Measurements

Mint Oil ~

Mint Leaves
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Glass Jar
Fine Mesh Sieve or Cheesecloth
Glass Bowl
Method:
  • Wash the mint leaves carefully and pat dry with kitchen paper.
  • Allow to dry but not to a brittle state.
  • Crush or bruise the leaves with the fingers by scrunching up.
  • Pop the leaves into the jar fill up to near the top.
  • Pour olive oil over the mint up to the top.
  • Screw on lid and if in a warm climate leave it in sunlight for a few days, giving it a good shake twice a day. If it is winter or a cold climate, leave for 4-6 weeks, shaking it twice daily.
  • When it is ready, pour the oil through the fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a container to remove all the mint.
  • Add the oil back into your glass jar and secure tightly.
  • This will keep for 3-6 months.
Use it for both culinary dishes and beauty recipes that need oil and mint. Culinary ideas include dressings, dips, deserts, marinades, with potatoes . . . the list is long so you can be as adventurous and creative as you like.
Beauty recipes using oil or one that includes mint are perfect for this or use as a moisturizer on its own for either combination or oily skins in particular.

Suzie's Tip

Why not use the mint oil recipe instead of the almond oil? A great way of utilizing this product which will work wonders for the skin.

Lemon Mint Foot Scrub ~

1 lemon
12 mint leaves
2-3 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp sweet almond oil
Glass jar
Blender
Method:
  • Chop up the entire lemon, removing seeds. Add to the blender and blend it until it is a pulp.
  • Chop up the mint leaves finely and add these to a bowl with the sugar and almond oil. Add in the lemon pulp and mix well together.
  • Apply to tired sore feet by applying to slightly damp skin in small massage movements all over the foot area to the top of the ankle.
  • Pay particular attention to any dry, flaky patches, hard skin, eczema or fungal infections.
  • Leave on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing off with warm water or soaking them in a foot soak bowl making sure to remove all the scrub.
  • Finish with a foot cream or massage oil to keep the tootsies in tip top condition all year round!
  • If you have any left, store it in an airtight glass container in the fridge. This should last a few weeks (mine did), providing you do not allow any water into it as this will lead to bacteria forming.
  • Make sure if washing mint, leaves are completely dry before bruising and when using scrub use a spoon or spatula to remove scrub and not fingers.

For an extra kick add a few slices of cucumber to the mint and mash them in together. Cucumber is hydrating, soothing and takes care of any puffiness and dark circles.

Dark Circle Mint Remedy ~

Sprig of fresh mint
2-3 slices cucumber (optional)
Mortar and pestle
Kitchen paper
Method:
  • Wash and carefully pat the leaves dry with kitchen paper.
  • Allow them to dry on a paper towel if necessary.
  • Crush the leaves in the mortar with the pestle to a pulp.
  • Apply the pulp with the ring finger gently patting it in under the eye area on dark circle. I recommend using the ring finger as it is less likely to drag the delicate skin tissue and the best finger to use for all eye treatments.
  • Leave on for 15-20 minutes and rinse off carefully.
Pat the eye area gently and apply an eye gel, eye cream or eye serum.

Suzie's Tips

Since you will be relaxing for 20 minutes or so why not apply your dark circle mint remedy at the same time to kill two birds with the one stone?

Fresh and Fruity Mint Face Mask –

Ideal for oilier skin this mask does a bit of everything! It deep cleans pores, exfoliates, tones, moisturizes, soothes, heals any pimples and has anti-inflammatory properties.
1 egg white
1 tbsp finely chopped fresh mint
1/4 -1/2 cucumber
1/2 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp apple juice
Blender
Small container
Method:
  • Add all the ingredients into the blender and mix it to a smooth paste like consistency.
  • Spoon it into your container.
  • Apply to a cleansed and makeup free neck and face, avoiding the eye area.
  • Take a break and lie down for 20-30 minutes.
  • If you have some spare cucumber and mint leaves, why not combine this recipe with the dark circle remedy? Another option is to place a cucumber slice over both eyelids. Yes I know it is so often mentioned but cucumber really is amazing on the skin and on the eyes particularly.
  • To remove the face mask, rinse off with warm water finishing with a splash of cold water to tighten the pores.
  • Pat the skin dry before applying your serum or/and face balm.

Orange and Mint Skin Toner ~

A simple but highly effective exfoliating skin toner that removes any excess oils, dead skin cells and helps tighten the pores thanks to the menthol and iron in the mint.
The citric acid in the orange helps restore the Ph balance of the skin and the combination with astringent witch hazel gives a smooth feel to the complexion. Sensitive skin may find this too astringent and should avoid.
3 tbsp fresh mint leaves
1 tbsp witch hazel extract (astringent)
Peel of an orange chopped up
1 cup of boiling water
8 oz glass bottle / jar
Wide mouthed glass container with lid
Sieve
Method:
  • Crush or bruise the mint leaves to release the natural oils.
  • Add them into the wide mouthed container.
  • Add in the orange peel and pour over the boiling water.
  • Allow to fully cool and apply the lid.
  • I suggest leaving overnight in the kitchen giving a shake a couple of times.
  • Strain the toner into your glass jar, removing all the leaves and orange peel.
  • Stir in the witch hazel.
  • Apply your toner after cleansing with a dampened cotton pad to remove the final traces of cleanser, refresh the skin and prepare the skin for your serum or/and moisturizer.
  • As an alternative you can pour it into a spray bottle and use as an all over cooling body spray after the shower or bath.
  • This toner should last a month and you can keep it in the fridge for extra cooling benefits.

The 60's and Today

Lately there has been a resurgence of headbands seen worn on celebrities, teenagers, and young women everywhere.
Where did this trend come from? In the 1960s, headbands in a myriad of styles were popular on "mods" and hippies. The mod style of the headband was a wide accessory that was worn across the top of the head. They were usually a solid color and went with their go-go boots and mini skirts or dresses. Hippies wore theirs in more of a ninja style around the crown of their head. They either tied a scarf or bandanna around long locks or had a more natural one that was full of flowers.
How do these past styles translate to today? The mod style is seen in wide headbands; this is a more classic, clean-cut style of headband. There are a lot of modern ways to wear the hippie style of headbands. Most recently, floral crowns have been popular. Celebrities dressed up on the red carpet or other women on their wedding day have been seen wearing precious metal, jeweled, or flower adorned headbands that can go around the head in the hippie style or worn on top in the classic style.
There are also some unconventional ways to wear headbands today. One idea is to braid a piece of one's hair and wrap it around the head to give the appearance of a headband made out of hair. This is a hippie or bohemian relaxed look. Also, stylish sunglasses can be used to keep the hair pulled back by putting them on the head and pushing the bangs back. This is a great beach or summer look.
With so many ways to wear head bands today, everyone can use this chic, cute accessory to complement any wardrobe, style, or personality!

Is Wearing Beanie Hats Making a Comeback?

Beanies for men!
Beanies for men! | Source

Do you see all those beanies?

I remember the days when I used to see baseball caps as the choice of casual headwear in young and old men alike. However, I’ve noticed over the past few years that beanies seem to be making a comeback with the male population--even during the summer months! I see them more and more on men, and I'm starting to see them more often on women as well.
Beanies for women

Beanies for boys and girls

What is a beanie hat?

A beanie is called other things, such as a skully, probably because it fits so close to the skull. A Canadian term for a beanie is a tuque. You will also see the term spelled "toque," but the pronunciation is still with the long "u" sound.
Traditionally, beanies were knit caps that stuck close to the head to keep in warmth. You see them all the time in the Olympics—on skaters and skiers—but now they are expanding their popularity to be just an accessory for casual dress rather than a cold weather need.
Beanies aren’t just a practical head covering anymore. They make their own fashion statement. What statement that is I’m not sure. Is it just fashion recycling itself as it always does? Is it like the leggings and big shirts of the 1980s that are now running amuck again in the 21st century?

Celebrities wear beanies!

Whatever the reason for the comeback of the beanies, they are making their way to Hollywood. Here’s a photo of U2’s guitarist in a beanie. Does he look cold? No, he’s just fashionably sporting his plain knit beanie. Do you ever see Justin Beiber without a beanie? Brad Pitt and David Beckham wear them. I've seen Ashton Kutcher even wearing a beanie hat with a suit! Beanies aren’t just for cold weather anymore. They are a fashion statement, a style that many folks embrace!
And what about the female celebrities? Oh, yeah, they are wearing the beanies, too. The women’s beanies might be a little fancier, with buttons or studs, or long ties on the sides. Women wear beanies for fashion, but also as a great cover-up for a bad hair day. Check out these photos of female celebrities, including actress Drew Barrymore and model Heidi Klum covering up their hair with beanies. Miley Cyrus also stylishly camouflages what might be greasy locks with a cute beanie. Reese Witherspoon wears one, and singer Pink even wears one on the beach with her bikini. Definitely not a cold weather beanie! Check out all these beanies, including Paris Hilton’s leopard beanie.

Oops! Just found some beanies in my closet!

Rimmed and unrimmed beanies. Check out the fancy one--top right!

Who knew I had so many beanies?

Come to think of it, I have several beanies myself. Although I never thought of myself as joining in the trend, I guess I am to some extent. I just love hats, and if beanie hats are to be part of my growing collection, then I guess I’m in good—at least famous—company.
I’m amazed at all the options out there for beanies these days in terms of color and style. Surfstitch is a store based in Australia, where beanies are big! I was amazed at their online selections of beanies for men, women, and children.Surfstitch has some of the coolest beanies around. Have fun checking out beanies and more!

Well, the D&G Fragrance Anthology line will be officially released this September. But since I’m a perfume fanatic, I ran over to Nordies to catch the premier of these fragrant beauties just so that I could be able to bring you a review. So we all want to know if these perfumes interesting or not? And you know what? You’re in luck! It's a mix of both!
Surprisingly this perfume line is not as racy or scandalous as we all had assumed. These perfumes are actually quite wearable, common, and subdued. Perhaps even more so than the wide range of perfumes currently sitting on beauty counters. And for that reason I can see at least a few of these new Dolce & Gabbana perfumes becoming best-sellers.

L'Amoureux 6 Review

As you may already know from catching the news in all the perfume blogs, the D&G Fragrance Anthology perfumes are built around the concept of tarot cards. Each is named for a card and tries to capture the character of the card.
My personal favorite of the whole D&G Fragrance Anthology collection is L’Amoureux 1. You're probably thinking: What is she talking about? That's a men's cologne. Well yes and no. It is a cologne and, of course, it's perfect for men. But you might be surprised this fall, when you catch your first sniff. The whole D&G Fragrance Anthology line is very unisex and soft. They all boast a little bit of femininity and masculinity.
So anyway, back to it: L'Amoureux is a wonderful smouldering-and-spiced wood cologne. It’s light enough for a women. But it's still very smooth and interesting. The spice and wood never seems to fall flat or linear. The scent remains soft, velvety and smoky for hours on end. A load of herbal, peppery ensures that this cologne maintains a perky attitude long after your first spray. The official list of notes include: spices, bergamot, juniper, pink pepper, cardamom, birch leaf, orris, wood and musk.

L'Imperatrice 3 Review

The second best fragrance out of the D&G Fragrance Anthology collection is one that many girls will go ga-ga over: L'Imperatrice.
The name and face of the perfume say it all! Naomi Campbell. The Empress. This scent is full of feline power.
L'Imperatrice is a mix of citrus and florals. The result is unbelievable modest and cooling. Unlike the other fruity florals that rely on a screeching citrus zing or syrupy fruit notes to hold your attention, L'Imperatrice is a girly perfume is surprisingly understated. The perfume include a delicious mix of fruity floral notes: watermelon, kiwi, pink cyclamen, musk

La Lune 18 Review

La Lune is the third most interesting fragrance in the D&G Fragrance Anthology bunch. It's defined as a lily musk perfume. Overall it's a quiet floral musk that is very pretty. It's not as sweet or earthy as Flowerbomb and it's not as mature as powdered floral perfumes. La Lune is well-rounded, slightly sweet and very womanly. The notes include: lily, tuberose, sandalwood, musk, iris root and leather. It's safe to say that the leather and sandalwood notes are extremely soft if not all together negligible. But the mix of florals and sweet musk is very dainty!

La Roue de la Fortune 10 Review

After those three modest fragrances, the D&G Fragrance Anthology line takes a turn for the typical. La Roue de la Fortune smells kind of like all the other perfumes on the market. Which of course, doesn't necessarily mean a bad thing. Here's why: La Roue smells like a mouth-watering, hunger-inducing fruit fest. And guess what! Sweet, saturated girly gourmands are really popular!
While La Roue is another to add to the list of girly gourmands, this perfume is actually a rather nice girly gourmand. It's a heady mix of nectar-dripping florals and creamy fruits. And while it's sweet, it's never cloying or overly saturated. Also there is little in the base to offer this perfume a sense of mystery or sensuality. So all in all, it smells youthful, wearable and edible! The official list of notes includes: tuberose, gardenia, jasmine, benzoin and patchouli.

Le Bateleur 1 Review

Le Bateleur is the other cologne in the D&G Fragrance Anthology line. Like L'Amoureux, Le Bateleur is a soft cologne that women could even pull off. Le Bateleur is a straight-up citrus-aquatic fragrance.
There is nothing too extreme in Le Bateleur. It's simply a great wearable aquatic. There is nothing too dry, there is nothing to bitter, there is nothing too herbal. It's not at all eye opening. And for a simple, classic citrus-aquatic fragrance, Le Bateleur is a pretty good one.
The official list of notes on this perfume is pretty vague, but it does offer some hints: aromatic notes, aquatic notes, cedar, vetiver. If you prefer an invigorating scent, Le Bateleur could be your best pick!

The Verdict

The perfumes in the D&G Fragrance Anthology collection are safe and subdued. With all the hype about naked models, many perfumistas were expecting crazy, sensual fragrances. But actually when you think about it, the advertising actually does match the fragrances. We were just confused!
The naked-aspect of the advertising may have been suggesting this whole time that the D&G Fragrance Anthology perfumes are all skin-scents. Skin-scents, for those who are wondering, are those perfumes that are soft, wearable and tend to stay close to your skin. They are not screeching, attention grabbing, or openly seductive.
So now that we've got our bearings on the D&G Fragrance Anthology perfumes and now that we finally understand their true characters, I must say that they're very good for what they are. Ground-breaking, they are not. Wearable and lovable, they are indeed! For those who don't have a head for strong perfumes, or those who have modest personalities, and even those who simply want a break from the ostentatious perfume fare, D&G Fragrance Anthology is worth checking out.
